Nursery Extension, Lostwithiel

A large timber framed extension to increase the size of a children’s nursery in Lostwithiel, Cornwall, and brand new staff office and break room.

This extension nearly doubled the size of the existing nursery, and was wholly built while the nursery was operating at full capacity! A challenging project for many reasons but we are very proud of the light, airy and highly functional spaces created both indoors and out.

We worked closely with the management and staff to devise a build program that would cause the least disruption possible to the nursery and its children during the build. Our great team worked evenings and weekends on parts of the project that were impossible to do around young children, such as knocking through to the existing nursery.

The extension was at the back of the property, so to gain access we built a temporary road through the adjoining field and liaised with neighbours to access their track for concrete deliveries. We also redesigned and rebuilt the staff office in a single week when it became clear that moving it by crane (as originally planned) was not feasible due to the ground conditions in January.

We fully project managed this build, which included many design changes that were necessary for buildability and for the building to function properly for the client. We brought in and managed a range of subcontractors including a groundworks team, electricians, plumbers, plasterers and decorators. We also co-designed the landscaping with the nursery staff and sourced contractors and suppliers for the tarmacking, new fencing and astroturf.
